solidworks Random repositioning of components

I'm about to seriously lose my cool. My engine assembly has ~ 100 unique parts and >330 total parts. The parts are jumping all over the place. I have a somewhat intricate collection of gears & bearings, that are now intersecting each other via their InPlace mates.

InPlace is *SUPPOSED* to put tham back where they were created!!! WHY ISN'T IT???

The last thing I changes was I selected the opening of parts to be "READ-ONLY" hoping that that little restriction would get the overzealous rebuilding tendency to cool it's jets. I've also been loosening the "fully defined" "requirement" for my assembly level sketches which has been *slowly* improving the rebuild speed.

While using an Excel based BOM (as opposed to a standard BOM) is not as flexible as a standard Bill of Materials, there are various customisations which can be done. E.g. if you want a complete project costing (taking into account price per meter length of piping or weldments). Note: in recent versions of SolidWorks it is possible to do totals and equations in standard BOMs, however they require some post manual tweaking.

This post shows how a custom Excel based Bill of Materials for a SolidWorks Assembly drawing can be created.

Find out where BOM templates are stored: Open SolidWorks -> Tools -> Options -> File Locations -> BOM Templates
Open bomtemp-all.xls Look at the various Headings in Row 1.
Remove/Add Columns to suit making sure to type in the SolidWorks File Property name into the "Name Property" box (see image below).
Do NOT remove the Item No. Column or Part No. Column (otherwise your Excel BOM will act strange, adding several duplicate rows into the BOM.) (I spent quite a while caught on this.) solidworks adjust default setting Revision Table size/columns/font

Back a couple years ago SolidWorks gave us the capability to add flagnotes to our drawings without having to put a ''boarder'' over the number or letter. Although a small problem there are only 99 of each. Yes I know 99 is pleanty for 99.9% of all users. BUT, have you ever wanted another type of symbol, like a critical dimension symbol, key feature, or a tweek on a symbol that is already there, etc?. These can all be done with an edit to a file in the SolidWorks directory. The file is called gtol.sym. Its essentially a text file with the extention changed to sym.

The gtol.sym file is found in c:\\lang\english directory\. Open the file with notenad or any text editor you choose.

Opening up the file you will find there are editing and new creation directions at the top of the file.Step 1 is to make your own new catagory. Add a ''#'', and without a space add a shortened version name of what you catagory you are creating followed by a comma. Again no space then the whole catagory name you would like.

Example ''#Crit,Critical Notes'' (without the quotes).

Step 2, hit enter to go to the next line, and now its time to create the symbol itself. We need to give a name for SolidWorks to associate the symbol with and a name that the user pulls from the symbol pull down list. To do this type a ''*'' followed by possibly shortened name of the symbol, followed by a comma and then the name the user will see while creating the note.

Example ''*Crit1,Critical Note 1'' (without the quotes).

Step 3 is building the symbol with lines, arcs, circles, text and the other types listed above based on start end points.
Example:

A,LINE 0.,0.,2.0,0.
A,LINE 2.0,0.,3.2,.8
A,LINE 3.2,.8,2.0,1.6
A,LINE 2.0,1.6,0,1.6
A,LINE 0,1.6,0.,0.

CRITCreating the symbol lines and all can be frustrating at times, but if you copy and paste from a similar type symbol, it will be much easier. If you need to create a symbol from scratch then drawing the symbol in SolidWorks and getting data from the x,y positions based with the lower left position at 0,0 and the distances in metric.

A symbol can be placed in your drawing, part or assembly any of 3 different ways.

SolidWorks Sub-Assembly Selection and Opening

Before creating new components in the context of an assembly, you can specify the default behavior for saving the new components either as separate external part files or as virtual components within the assembly file. See Saving New In-Context Components.

In the FeatureManager design tree, right-click either the top-level assembly icon or the icon for an existing sub-assembly, and select Insert New Sub-assembly.Click New Assembly (Assembly toolbar) or Insert, Component, New Assembly.

In the FeatureManager design tree, an empty subassembly is inserted as the last component of the selected assembly. Virtual subassemblies appear with a name in the form [Assem n ^ assembly_name ]. Externally saved subassemblies appear with a name in the form Assem n.

Add components to the sub-assembly:

To move a component that is already in the assembly into the sub-assembly, see Dragging Components to Edit the Assembly Structure or Assembly Structure Editing.

To add an existing, saved component to the sub-assembly, right-click the sub-assembly icon in the FeatureManager design tree, and select Edit Sub-assembly. Then insert components using any of the methods in Adding Components to an Assembly.

To insert a new component into a sub-assembly, you must edit the sub-assembly in its own window. You cannot insert a new component into a sub-assembly while you are editing the top-level assembly. Also, you cannot insert a new component while you are editing the sub-assembly in the context of a higher level assembly. Right-click the sub-assembly icon in the FeatureManager design tree, and select Open Assembly to open the sub-assembly in its own window. Then add a new component.

how Solidworks files are linked to one another

SolidWorks provides you with several ways to view which mates are associated to a component.

The most general way is to place your cursor over the top icon in the assembly FeatureManager, and right-mouse-click. Choose the option Tree Display – View Mates and Dependencies. This will place the FeatureManager in a mode where all the mates are grouped beneath their components. To return to the default display mode, right-click again at the top icon, and select Tree Display – View Features.

SolidWorks 2000 added a new assembly function to make mate searches even more convenient. Right-click over any component, and select View Mates. This invokes a split-screen display of the FeatureManager, and fills the lower half with the list of mates affecting that component. Starting with SolidWorks 2007, this command also shows callouts in the graphics window to illustrate the associated mates.

SolidWorks 2004 added folders on the FeatureManager for the mates attached to each component. Expand any part or subassembly in the assembly FeatureManager and you will find a "Mates in <assembly name>" folder directly beneath the icon for the part or subassembly. Expand the tree for that folder and you will see a short list of the mates of the parent assembly which involve that particular component.

What is the Best Way to Create a New Copy of an Existing Assembly, as Well as its Parts (Some of Which Have In-Context Features), and the Assembly Drawing?

This is often desired if you have a new design that is a modification of an old design, but you would like to manage and modify the new design separately. The easiest way is to use the Pack and Go command added in SolidWorks 2007 (see below). Here is an older method that also works:

solidworks change part reference in drawing

Models and Drawings generated through DriveWorks Administrator, User or Autopilot can execute a SolidWorks macro after all of the captured parameters have been driven. There are two methods available to allow this:
Run a SolidWorks macro on all models or drawings.
Run a SolidWorks macro on a single model or drawing.
The Macro
The macro must contain a module called DriveWorks, all code within a sub-routine called Main in this module will be executed by DriveWorks.
1. Run a SolidWorks macro on all models or drawings
The macro must be located in a sub-folder of the Group Content folder called Macros. They must have the names as listed below.
There are four types of macro that can be executed:
Model.swp - will be run on all models before any individual macros have been executed
ModelAfterMacro.swp - will be run on all models after any individual macros have been executed
Drawing.swp - will be run on all drawings before any individual macros have been executed
DrawingAfterMacro.swp - will be run on all drawings after any individual macros have been executed
Information on locating the Group Content Folder can be found in General Settings
The Macros that are to be used globally must be stored in a folder called "Macros", for example, if the Group content folder is found at "C:\DriveWorks\My Project\" then the global macros folder should be found at "C:\DriveWorks\My Project\Macros"
2. Run a SolidWorks macro on a single model or drawing
The macro must be located in the same location as the master model or drawing.
The name of the macro must be the same as the master model it is to be run on, as drawings can have the same name as a model a macro to be run on a drawing must have Draw appended to the file name.
For example the SolidWorks documents:
MyAssembly.sldasm will have a macro named MyAssembly.swp
MyPart.sldprt will have a macro named MyPart.swp
MyDrawing.slddrw will have a macro named MyDrawingDraw.swp
Example
This example requires a custom property in the SolidWorks model the macro will be run on called SaveLocation. This custom property can be captured and the model will be saved to the location, with the file name and extension driven into the custom property value.
For example if the custom property SaveLocation results in the value C:\DriveWorks\Images\Project1005.jpg the model will be saved to C:\DriveWorks\Images as a .jpg image file.
